This is the warning that both of these drugs failed to carry on their labels to inform either the prescribing physicians or their unsuspecting patients.
And that’s why the attorneys of the Ruth Law Teamare currently accepting cases against both GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer on behalf of women who, unaware of the potential danger, were prescribed and took either of these medications and whose children were born with a birth defect that is associated with these drugs.
Paxil and Zoloft are SSRI ( selective serotonin receptive inhibitors) medications which are commonly used to treat depression.
A new Swedish study has verified that SSRI antidepressants increase the risk for birth defects when taken by the mother during early pregnancy.
The newest study focused on newborn babies with persistent pulmonary hypertension , which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth. Babies born with this condition have high pressure in their lung blood vessels and are not able to get enough oxygen into their bloodstream. Other birth defects linked to SSRI antidepressants include serious heart defects, spina bifida, omphalocele (intestines or other abdominal organs stick outside the body), club foot, limb reduction deficits, and craniosynostosis (one or more sutures in the skull prematurely fuses).
We feel there is evidence to support the claim that both manufacturers knew or should have known of the serious potential of birth defects when taken by pregnant women. If physicians had been aware they may have chosen not to prescribe either of these drugs, and if advised of the danger the women would have had the option to decline the medication.
